Which Lace Lasts After Washing
| Trim | Washing | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cotton crochet lace | Machine wash, gentle | Daily cotton kurtis |
| Cutwork scallop lace | Machine wash, gentle | Summer whites and pastels |
| Net lace | Hand wash | Festive georgette suits |
| Gota patti lace | Hand wash or dry clean | Festive cotton silk |
| Zardosi and dabka | Dry clean | Wedding wear |
Pre-wash cotton lace once before stitching. It shrinks a little and will pucker the neck if it shrinks after.
Placing Buttons on a Neck
- Placket buttons: space them about 1 inch apart; five or six on a 6 inch placket.
- Potli buttons: best on shoulders of a boat neck or along a back slit.
- Loop buttons: use rouleau loops on a slit for a soft, handmade look.
- Pearl buttons: look good on chanderi and mul; remove before a hard wash.
Buttons that only decorate still need a hook or press button behind them on a deep neck, or the neck will open when you bend.
Lace Necks for Different Shapes
Lace adds width wherever it sits. On broad shoulders, keep lace on a V or a placket so the line runs down. On narrow shoulders, a boat neck with lace across the shoulders adds width. If you have a short neck, choose thin lace on a V rather than a wide border on a round neck. For easy daily options, see our cotton kurti neck designs.
Neckline questions
How do I stitch a stylish neck design with lace at home?
Cut and face the neck first, then lay the lace on the edge and stitch it along the facing seam. Mitre the corners on square or V necks. Press with a cloth on top so the lace does not shine.
Which neck design with lace and button suits daily wear?
A round neck with a short placket, cotton lace on both sides and plain or pearl buttons is easy for daily wear. It is light, washes well and works under a dupatta. Keep fancier potli buttons for festive kurtis.
What is a scallop neck design for kurti?
It is a neck edge cut into small curves, either from the fabric itself or using ready scallop lace. Scallops of about 1 inch look neat on cotton and chanderi. The darzi needs a full facing and must clip each curve well.
Which lace is best for a cotton suit neck?
Cotton crochet lace and cutwork lace are the best because they wash and dry like the kurti. Pre-wash the lace before stitching. Avoid plastic backed or metallic lace on daily cotton suits.
Can I add neck embroidery to an old kurti?
Yes. Ask for the embroidery on a separate yoke or patti and stitch it over the old neck. Aari and mirror work patches are easy to add. Match the depth of the old neck so it covers the old stitch line.
Do potli buttons need special care?
Potli buttons are covered with fabric or zari and can lose shape in a machine. Hand wash the kurti or remove the buttons if they are sewn on loops. Store the kurti folded with tissue over the buttons.
